STORAGE · PRACTICAL GUIDE
How to make better use of wardrobe space
Arrange clothes around what you wear, with storage that lets you see and reach what you need.
Sort before adding storage
Take one section out and separate everyday clothing, occasional items and things you no longer wear. Work with manageable groups so you can finish the job the same day. Check for items that are hidden because they have slipped behind a pile. Decide what needs hanging and what folds comfortably, following garment care instructions. Do this before estimating how many new hangers or boxes you need.
Use rail space thoughtfully
Compare hanger width, shape and suitability for your garments. Slim hangers can reduce the space taken by the hanger itself, but tightly packed clothes remain hard to remove. Leave enough room to move items along the rail. Heavy coats may need a different hanger from lightweight tops. Check the hanger’s stated load rather than using one design for every garment.
Give shelves a clear purpose
Group folded items by how you choose them: work clothes, casual tops or bedding, for example. Keep stacks low enough to lift one item without disturbing everything above it. Measure shelf depth before choosing bins and allow room to pull them out. Use labels where contents cannot be seen. Leave the most convenient shelf for things you regularly need, rather than filling it with rarely used storage.
Store seasonal items with a plan
Put away only clean, fully dry clothing and bedding. Label stored items so you can find them without opening every bag. Check material-care advice before compressing delicate or filled items in vacuum bags. Measure the actual storage gap: a large soft bag is not automatically an under-bed bag. Review the arrangement after a few weeks and move anything you keep reaching for.
